A sundial square for the Master

Marti Square is a monumental work of the architect Domingo Alás Rosell, and is located in the historic center of this city of Las Tunas, capital of the province of the same name. This is a project of commemorative and environmental solar architecture in which astronomy is mixed with the story. It comes after a deep historical, astronomical and architectural study and its main protagonists are the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, represented by a sculpture by Rita Longa, and the sun. It was inaugurated on March 25, 1995, in commemoration of the centenary of the signing of the Manifesto of Montecristi, and is one of the largest institutions connotation in the territory, not only for the wealth of information that holds on so-called Apostle the independence of Cuba, but for the cultural values that are part of it. Marti Monument and the sundial are unique elements inside and outside the country. In principle, the clock is based on the movement of shadows, and the light will illuminate the solar calendar for specific, such as the birth and death of the Maestro historical dates. In addition, each May 19, at approximately 2:00 pm, time of death, a cone of light on the bronze mask Martí conceived by the sculptor Rita Longa is projected. Marti Plaza is distinguished by three essential components: a solar reflector convertivo, a calendar and a sundial seven meters and 20 centimeters in diameter, oriented north-south geographical direction, parallel to the axis of rotation of the Earth, defined precisely when exactly five minutes. This beautiful space is composed of other current architectural symbols captured in a mural, and a monument on the exact spot where he fell in battle in the city of Las Tunas Guardian Angel Bello, the only eyewitness to the fall of the National Hero of Cuba in Dos Rios in 1895. The monumental is the setting for major events, awards and morning by many organizations, research centers and working in the province. Among the activities carried out are the vigil concert on 27 January each year waiting for the January 28, birthday of the national hero, technical consultations to students and scholars of the life and work of José Martí, conducting lectures, morning, conference on the Apostle among other important anniversaries of interest to the public.
